Government/Public Sector - Education

After decades where Schools and Colleges were procured under traditional procurement methods this government sector is now taxed with providing their future educational needs through PPP/PFI funded procurement routes.

Knowles recognises that Building Schools for the Future as an enormous opportunity both for the industry and for the future of education in this country. Not since the 1950's and '60's has anything like this level of investment been provided for education and it is for all those involved in education to ensure that our children have the teaching, facilities and resources to achieve their ambition and potential.

The governments Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme will extend the co-operation between public and private sectors to enhance, even further, the improvement of education. The purpose of the initiative is clear: the provision of 21st century facilities to allow every child to achieve its aspirations and potential and improve educational achievement. This is an education driven initiative, and those who think otherwise have missed the point.

Knowles have worked with many education establishments from a client's perspective. We have also been involved in a facilitator's capacity when a schools project is at planning stage using the ethos of partnering to gain best value. Some of our clients have been main and subcontractors who have experienced problems during a construction project associated with the education sector and we are pleased to say that most of our clients have gained benefit from our wide experience and depth of understanding in this important sector.

The Future
The implementation of BSF currently only provides for secondary education. It is hoped that it will expand in the future to encompass primary schools (especially since the demise of Partnerships for Church Schools) and the Academies. The ambitions that have been put forward by government for BSF would suggest that the integration of education 'from cradle to grave', combined with the regenerative aspirations of every member of society, would suggest that an integrated approach is not only desirable, but essential.
