Energy - Oil & Gas Production/Decommissioning

There are now more than 6,500 offshore oil and gas installations worldwide. About 4,000 of these are in the US Gulf of Mexico, 950 in Asia, 700 in the Middle East and 400 are in Europe. It is a simple fact that a given installation may only have a useful life of 20 years or so. At the end of that time, unless it is re-used or redeveloped, it must be decommissioned . (source: OGP, UKOOA, OLF).

From a UK stance Knowles have keenly followed the developments in the decommissioning of the North Sea Oil and Gas installations and realise that many of the installations in the North Sea are reaching the end of their economic production life, and proposals for decommissioning them are being prepared by the operators. In 1995, proposals by Shell to dispose of the Brent Spar oil storage facility provoked an extensive campaign of protest. The result was a change of plan, with the facility being towed inshore to be dismantled. The material has been recycled as a harbour at Mekjarvik, near Stavanger, Norway. This area of decommissioning, as with nuclear decommissioning, holds many environmental problems and objections.

Contracts for decommissioning from now until 2010 are estimated at £450m with many of the large contracts being awarded to international/foreign contractors. Knowles continues to work with many of the leading companies who are associated with the decommissioning of the UK Oil and Gas industries. Also, as our organisation is worldwide we are involved with the decommissioning of oil and gas installations in many different worldwide locations.
